We started on Feb 23rd by taking the chair-rail off the wall. Apparently the builders put up the chair rail before doing any texture or paint, so I had to mud the area where the chair rail was.

We had planned on putting on a rough texture on the wall anyways, but it was just another step that slowed us down a bit. An old neighbor in Springville taught me how to do the texture on a wall. It's not difficult, but it is time consuming and only one person can do the whole room, so it has the same look and feel.
After the rough texture had dried, you come back through with a damp cloth and wipe down the whole wall, which softens the edges and gives us the look we were wanting.
The majority of the walls in our house are tan. We wanted a little change so we decided on doing a "chocolate" wall. That was the easy part. The harder part was getting the right color paint for the other three walls. 3 different colors later (and 2 gallons of custom, non-returnable paint) we got the right color. We also put down new baseboards. (5 1/2 inch baseboards vs the 3 inch old ones)
Today I finished caulking and covering up the nail holes on the baseboards, so the next step is to paint the baseboards.
So phase 1 is just about complete. Phase 2 is to get a new desk and chair and Phase 3 is to put up french doors.
