We needed a break from the cold and wet Utah weather and we'd never seen our new niece, Katelyn Bryce, (4 months old now) so we decided to head to Phoenix, AZ for the week.
Kati and Boston were nice enough to let us stay at their house all week.

Jury says Novell Owns Unix Copyrights, Not SCO Group
For about 80% of the time I've worked for Novell, the SCO vs Novell lawsuit has been going on. It's hard to remember a time before the lawsuit.
However after 8 years, SCO vs Novell finally had its day in court, and SCO lost. A federal jury decided today that Novell owns the Unix copyrights.
SCO's stock didn't do so well today.

BrainShare 2010
BrainShare is back.
Last year, due to the economy, BrainShare (Novell's yearly technical conference in SLC, UT) was cancelled. BrainShare's been going for 20+ years, so it was a downer that it was cancelled. It's always fun to get away from the office for a week and work at BrainShare in SLC.
Over the last few years at BrainShare, I've helped teach a number of technical sessions, however I've always been the 2nd presenter. (Where the 1st presenter created the presentation, then asked me to help teach.) Although I had helped revise presentation, I had never actually submitted the idea, it been accepted and then create the presentations myself.
However this year I decided to submit a few ideas for a technical session I wanted to teach on Privileged User Manager (the new product I took over about 9 months ago). I submitted two ideas, but they were combined into one session.
In addition to the technical session, I also helped man a booth for the product and showed demos to customers.
This is the only picture I captured. It's the back of Rich, a co-worker of mine from the UK, and the booth that I spent most of my time at.
BrainShare was fun, but very tiring. I drove back and forth each day. Not sure I could ever commute an hour each way. A typical day was leaving the house by 6:30am-7:00am and getting home around 7pm or 8pm.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre
We have a flowering pear tree in our front yard. Years ago (before we bought the house) the original owners allowed a shoot to come off of the roots (with the roots being a real pear tree). So we have a flowering pear with the main trunk of the tree being a real pear. The problem is, the pear tree would drop it's fruit and make a mess. So I decided to finally take the pear trunk down and leave the flowering pear (even though there is a huge whole in the middle of the tree now.

Old faithful
My dad called me and asked me to go on one last ice fishing trip. Typically March is considered the end of the season for ice fishing, so we thought we'd make one last attempt.
Sydney was the only that would come with me. Sydney and I spent the night at dad's house and left early (6:30am) Saturday morning. We hadn't fished up at Strawberry Reservoir this year and thought we'd try out luck there.
We got there around 8am and it was bitterly cold. But we quickly got the holes drilled and the tent setup (and as you can see the heater on for Sydney.)
Sydney and I fished in the tent. The fish weren't biting, but we were able to catch one fish. I hooked it, then handed the pole to Sydney. She was reeling it in and finally asked me for help as it was difficult to reel in. After taking the pole back, a few cranks of the reel and a nice size fish appeared at the bottom of the ice hole. (Ice was about 22 inches thick).
The only bad thing about fishing at Strawberry Reservoir is everything 15 inches to 22 inches has to be thrown back, which is just about everything you catch.

Oil...check. Eggs....check
I recently change my work schedule to accommodate some odd timezones. In doing so, I don't see the kids in the morning, but get home close to when they get out of school. As I drove home Sydney called me. She had called to ask me to help her make brownies. I told her I would help her when I got home, then asked her to get everything. When I arrived home, I found this.
Sydney was ready and from the looks of the back of this brownie mix, she had checked her list twice. I had a fun time with her making brownies.
It's tradition in our family to leave a little of the brownies in the bowl as a "reward" after the brownies are cooking.

The Creator
For Christmas, Ryan got a cool "creator" lego set. The creator sets allows you to build 3 different things from the same set up of legos.
We first worked on the Convertible. I think it took around 6 - 8 hours (with distractions in between).
After a few months of admiring the convertible, Ryan tore it completely apart and started on the Semi Truck.

Burgers, Fries and Bears
For Ryan's up coming Cub Scout Pack Meeting, each family was asked to bring a cake as the center piece. Deni decided to make Burger's and Fries.
They look so realistic. Buns = Cupcakes. Meat= brownies, ketchup=red frosting, etc. I don't think there's anything Deni can't do in the kitchen.
Ryan received his Cub Scout "Bear" badge tonight. He's been done for a while but offically received it. Grandma and Grandpa Berger were able to come and attend the court of honor.

Dear workers at the DMV
Dear workers at the DMV,
I had an hour to kill (aka my lunch hour) so I decided to pay a visit to your establishment. (Ok, my license was expired and I didn't have a choice, if I wanted to continue driving legally.)
I have a few questions that I'm hoping you, as Government employees, can answer. I've attempted to come up with the answers myself during my lengthy visit, but was unable to obtain an acceptable answer.
Question 1. Why do I feel safe walking through Wal-mart but fear for my safety at the DMV?
Question 2. Where are all the normal people? (To help you answer this question - typically when you visit a public establishment, you see a mixture of people from different nationalities, income brackets, and walks of life. But not at the DMV!)
Question 3. Why is it easier to get a Passport?
(Seriously, you require the following documents to get a Drivers license - Passport, (or birth certificate), Social Security Card, Utility bill (with address), major credit card (with address).
Question 4. This is more of a comment than a question. As I sat and watched the 80 year old lady (with her glasses on) attempt to pass the DMV eye exam over and over and over, I grew more anxious and now fear for my own safety as I drive on Utah's highways and roads. If someone can't pass an eye exam with glasses on, maybe you should suggest a good eye Dr, instead of giving them a Drivers License.
